General goal :

Understand the behavior of container ships, in particular very large ships such as ULTRA LARGE CONTAINER SHIP.

Teaching method:

Classroom teaching is kept to a strict minimum of about an hour per day and a total of five hours per week. Participants sail on the lake for about three and a half hours in both the morning and the afternoon, making a total of seven hours per day and 35 hours per week.

Educational equipment implemented

Theory in classroom: Paper board, charts, diagram, ship tools…

Practice on the lake: piers, models, PPU, wave machine, current generators, wind maker, Vhf…

Program

Provisional schedule of manoeuvres

Day 1 :

Exercises with all container ships available in order to be comfortable with different models and the similarity.

Different tracks. Track 1 for ULCS with berthing Pier N°4.(Option with South wind >> berthing H.)

Day 2 :

AM :

  • Use of PPU on ULCS for turning in different circumstances. Point out the « swept area » , turning in deep and shallow water with max draft.
  • Manoeuver in shallow water with 333 m container.

PM :

  • Different dockings in shallow water and narrow areas. Control of the ROT on ULCS, control of speed vectors. (PPU)
  • Manoeuver in very shallow water with 333/14 m. Control of the speed in such conditions. Docking.

Day 3 :

AM :

  • Different manoeuvers with small and medium container ships (Normandie , Otello) in the canal with or without emergencies.(Tug available if necessary)
  • Use of the tug on the aft (escort) with ULCS. Control of the speed and drift.

PM :

  • Emergencies on a track with escort tug and current, and docking with restricted means of manoeuver.(ULCS)
  • Docking with 333m container ship using anchors and or bow and stern thruster (if no tug available)

Day 4 :

AM :

  • Docking with current after passage in a channel (deep water) , entering a lock, use of the tug aft to control and keep a moderate drift with an accurate course.
  • PPU in different modes, docking, navigation …. On board of the ULCS.
  • Same conditions and exercise, but without a tug, on the 333m container ship, in order to compare differences (position of the wheel house, drift, visibility…)

PM :

  • Passage with an ULCS in a narrow canal (Suez) to feel the bank effects, adjust the speed according to the steering, experiment the situation in confined waters.
  • Lock, navigation in a mixed type canal and docking stemming the tide with or without anchor on board of a 333 m.

Day 5 :

AM :

  • Meeting between two container ships in Suez canal.
  • Second meeting in a deep water channel with ULCS.

PM :

  • Summary of the week experiences.
  • Current, docking, use of PPU on ULCS, « swept area » , etc….

REMARKS : We will stress the importance of using all navigation aids for the ULCS, as well as being aware of the limits and specificities of that kind of ship.

Wind and current have to be taken into account very seriously, never exceed safety limits !

Effects of shallow waters will be pointed out in all various situations
