The model fleet

The Port Revel fleet is at present made up of eleven manned models and three radio-controlled tractor tugs.
Seven of the manned models represent at scale real oil tankers or bulk carriers ranging from 17 000 to 400 000 dwt.
The eighth is a replica of the liquid natural gas (LNG) carrier "Ben Franklin" (125 000 m3).
The ninth is a replica of a 4 400 TEU post-panamax container ship, the "CGM-Normandie".
The tenth ship, introduced in 2009, is a model of the “CMA CGM Otello”, a large 8 500 TEU container ship. The latest ship, introduced in 2010, is a "Q-Max", a large 266 000 m3 LNG carrier.

All models but the Normandie and Otello are fitted with diesel motor and steam turbine, and the Normandie can be controlled from the front deck like a car carrier and a cruise ship, so that the fleet in fact reproduces 20 different vessels.

Since 2006, the Normandie is fitted with optional "pods" in order to reproduce the behaviour of a cruise ship.

The models are fitted out with all the conventional features found on board a real ship:

  • a "bridge", comprising:

the helm (wheel) and rudder angle indicator,
the "chadburn" (transmission of orders to engine room) and propeller rpm indicator,
    the compass,
    the electronic log (speed indicator),
    an anemometer,
bow and stern thruster controls (these thrusters can simulate the action of conventional tugs),
    remote control of anchors;

  • an "engine", replaced on the model by an electric motor supplied by a series of batteries on board, which serve as part of the ship's ballast,
  • a rudder (one model has a Becker rudder, another a Schilling rudder),
  • a bow thruster (most models also have a stern thruster),
  • mooring lines, including anchors and chain,
  • windlasses.

Obviously, the rudder and engine response times are respected.
These are adjustable, as is the "power" of the engine, so as to reproduce the characteristics of turbine or diesel engine propulsion.

The tugs are of three types:

VOITH-SCHNEIDER
VOITH-SCHNEIDER with TURBO FIN
ASD with Z-PELLER drive

These models are radio-controlled by a tug captain. They are able to provide a bollard pull of 65 to 120 tons at full scale (in a direct pull mode) which at the present time is well in excess of the bollard pull of existing tugs. Therefore the models were set at lower levels of 50-70 t.

With these models the Port Revel centre is in a position to provide an "escort" for the larger tanker or LNG tanker models, and to simulate and study realistically all types of emergency manoeuvres in restricted water conditions in the event of black-outs and/or engine or rudder failures.
